Understanding Hormonal Decline

Men, like women, undergo hormonal fluctuations throughout their lifespan. Hormones typically start decreasing in men around the age of 30-40, declining approximately 1-2 percent per year. It's important to note that even younger men can experience hormonal deficiencies.

Essential Hormones for Men

Testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone are crucial for maintaining the quality of life and health in men. These hormones have a profound impact on various aspects, including skin, hair, nails, memory, mood, libido, energy, anxiety, depression, muscle mass, orgasm, sleep patterns, cognition, brain health, heart health, erections, and more.

Key to Hormone Replacement Therapy

The crux of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for men lies in balancing these three essential hormones to improve symptoms and enhance the overall quality of life. While declining hormones are a natural aspect of aging, modern times provide opportunities to correct hormonal deficiencies. The goal is to enable men to age while maintaining vitality and well-being, ultimately helping them feel like themselves again.

MEN Q&A

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and plays an essential role in maintaining a man’s overall health. Testosterone affects skin, hair, nails, bone mass, muscle mass, energy, libido, erections, mental health, focus/cognitive abilities, and much more. Testosterone begins to decline at a rate of 0.4-2% annually after the age of 30 years. ¹ As men age, their testosterone levels begin to decline, and this is a natural part of aging. However, we have the ability today to address these deficiencies and maintain the health and quality of life for men throughout the course of their lifespans.

We will send you for a blood test to evaluate your hormone levels and make sure there are no other underlying issues. She will then see you in the office to perform an assessment to formulate the best course of treatment options to fit your needs.

Testosterone replacement therapy for men varies from creams, gels, and patches to injections or pellets. We will discuss all the options available to meet your specific needs.

This depends on the method of testosterone therapy, other health conditions, medications, severity of deficiency, lifestyle, etc. Most patients will begin to feel gradual benefit in 4-8 weeks and continue to improve over time. Keep in mind, there is accountability on your part as a patient as well. We can replace testosterone, but cannot help patients utilize it. We recommend sustainable lifestyle changes with diet and activity for optimal outcomes.

Many of the medication options are FDA-approved and commercially available. Testosterone pellets are compounded and made at a 503B outsourcing facility and pursuant to the same Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations as pharmaceutical manufacturers that manufacture FDA-approved, commercially available medications, and distribution is monitored by the FDA.

Dr. Mel does not accept insurance, but if you are a non-Medicare patient, you can submit a claim to your own insurance company for reimbursement purposes. Your lab work and some forms of testosterone may be covered by your health insurance. Check with your health plan for coverage details. We do accept HAS (health savings account) cards for treatment and services.

While Dr. Mel does not accept insurance for her services, she does educate patients on their therapy options, so they can decide on what will best fit their needs and budgets. She does not sell hormone therapy medications or perform lab work in the office, but many of the requirements for hormone therapy, such as routine lab work and some medication options, are covered by insurance. If you are uninsured, she works with local labs, imaging, and pharmacies to provide the best affordable treatment options possible.

Care Plans for men range from $750 to 2,600 a year, depending on the therapy option you decide best meets your needs. A $150 deposit is required for your consultation and can be rolled over into the package of your choice.

Depending on the therapy option chosen, Dr. Mel requires an evaluation of lab work and an assessment and evaluation of lab results every 3-4 months, either in the office or by phone, depending on the treatment option you choose. The cost of the evaluation and lab results reviewed is factored into your Care Plan. Dr. Mel closely monitors her patients to ensure they are safely and effectively receiving the therapy that is right for them.

This is based on the Care Plan and treatment therapy you choose. This can range from once weekly injections in the clinic to every 3-4 months for an in-office procedure or a phone call every 3- 4 months. Dr. Mel will discuss your options, so you can make an informed decision on which treatment plan will best fit your needs.

For as long as you want to maintain your quality of life, so FOREVER! As men age, their testosterone levels will naturally decline, and the only way to address that is testosterone replacement therapy. There are also options for younger men that are or may someday be family planning.
